Geography

Australia or more officially the Commonwealth of Australia, is a country in the Southern Hemisphere comprising the mainland of the Australian continent (the world's smallest), the island of Tasmania, and numerous smaller islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans.

Surrounded by the Indian and Pacific oceans, Australia is separated from Asia by the Arafura and Timor seas. The world's smallest continent and sixth largest country by total area, Australia – owing to its size and isolation – is often dubbed the island continent and variably considered the world's largest island.

Climate

By far the largest part of Australia is desert or semi-arid lands commonly known as the outback. Only the south-east and south-west corners of the continent have a temperate climate. The landscapes of the northern part of the country, with a tropical climate, consist of rainforest, woodland, grassland, mangrove swamps, and desert. The climate is significantly influenced by ocean currents, including the Indian Ocean Dipole and the El Niño-Southern Oscillation, which is correlated with periodic drought, and the seasonal tropical low pressure system that produces cyclones in northern Australia.

Customs and quarantine

Australia has strict quarantine requirements regarding importing animal and vegetable derived products (any food, wooden products, seeds, etc). You must declare all such material, and all baggage is scanned and examined by dogs prior to entry.

Sightseeing

Great Barrier Reef a UNESCO approved site is one of the most important spot for sightseeing in Australia. It is the largest reef of the world measuring up to 2011 km in length and 72 km in width. It has dense plantation with coral plants being the most common. Other places of interest in Australia are the Sydney Opera House, Taronga Zoo, Moreton Island and many more. The Taronga zoo was opened in 1884 in the New South Wales. A complete renovation has been done to this zoo because of which this is one of the most beautiful zoos.
